Back garden
WALTHAMSTOW | LONDON | 2021
LOCATION | Walthamstow London,
BRIEF | The aim was to create a planting plan that was low maintenance, encourages wildlife, has interest throughout the seasons through the use of large-leafed plants and lush green colours in the back garden. In the front, we utilised the south-facing aspect to growing more herbs and provide some privacy from the road.

Front garden
The planting scheme at the front of the garden is based on the idea of a Mediterranean garden. We wanted to create a sense of calm and a welcoming atmosphere. To do this we used grasses that provide movement and sound as they move in the wind. The structure comes from the Eucalyptus and Euphorbia characias providing all year-round interest and in the case of the Eucalyptus an excellent cut flower for use in the house. Seasonal interest is provided by Rudbeckia and an Artichoke provides pops of colour in the summer/ autumn.
Back garden
In the back of the garden, we have taken inspiration from the New Zealand rainforest to create a lush and relaxing space. The focus here is to play with the textures and primarily the colour green. A Dicksonia Antarctica has been chosen to be the focal point of the garden. The large fronds provide a canopy that great dappled shades underneath. Sarcocococca confusa provide all year colour and a lovely fragrance in winter followed Osmanthus delavayi then takes over and provide scent and white flowers from around early April to late May. The use of the Iris confusa has been chosen because of its bamboo-like foliage and very delicate flowers. As a lot of the texture is fairly loose the use of a Taxus baccata has been used as an anchor point from where the garden can centre itself. Climbers have been chosen to cover the fence over time adding to the rainforest effect.
